FT-857D @5wts to G5RV (40M) and Cushcraft MA5V vertical (20-10M).
98 QSOs the hard way! Lot's of fun Saturday - less fun on Sunday!
On Saturday, propagation was such that I heard DX stations along with some US
stations responding, but heard weakly in the headset. Lot's of fun! Most
exceptional contact was CX2AQ on 10M in Uruguay - 5 wts on his end also!
Sunday was different - if anything, the competition for DX contacts increased.
This time, however, I could hear the US stations also...very loudly. In some
cases, it was really ugly. Not sure if I was witnessing "spotting" pile-ups,
but lots of stations dead on top of the DX station frequency and constantly
sending their call-signs. The DX signal strong as it was, was completely
obliterated by people calling while he was transmitting - and I am not talking
rare DX! Even if I had been operating high power, it would have been
difficult to tell what the DX station was doing with everyone covering him up.
I think that I understand why OA4SS resorted to operating split - "OA4SS up".
The first 6 hours were fun and productive - often surprising...however the last
2.5 hrs were a bust.
Enough negatives! Sorry to gripe....because I still had a lot of fun.
