Comments:

With an unresolved noise problem and prospects of a low solar flux, I couldn't
manage to get motivated to prepare for this weekend. The 160 ant remained
disconnected -- a remnant of the noise hunt in December which went unaddressed
since, due to other priorities. Finally, after 0300Z, I got SO1R hooked up,
borrowed the quiet monitor from my XYL's setup, and expected to operate maybe
10 hours.

Hopped between 20/40/80 the first night, with lots of lengthy breaks, still not
really into it. Didn't even try 160 with the 80M ant. Went to sleep b4
sunrise, exhausted from a week of non tower work. At around noon, the power
went off due to a car hitting a nearby pole. At around 4 PM(2100Z), it finally
came back on. Didn't go op right away, then finally decided to work JAs on 15 &
10, knowing that N4WW was not M/2 and K4XS was LP. Ended the first day with
barely 1000 Qs in ~8 hrs, and line scores of 0/0 on 160, 150ish/8 on 15 and
31/3 on 10.

Continued to waffle between oping for a while and doing other things, then
decided to look for FCG expedition PJ4X on 160 with the 80M ant. Sure enough,
there they were @ 1809. Noticed how quiet the band sounded, too. It took a
few calls, but the experiment was a success. Worked another southern stn, then
heard M5E. Called him and actually got "K1?" back. 2 more overs and he was in
the log. As it turned out, the 80M ant was quite adequate on top band, logging
SZ1A among others. Only the weakest stations were unable to detect my calls.
Probably the most fun of the weekend was the 39/30 on 160, the highest line
score from here in many years. The best 160 ant is no ant at all!

80 was also a success, with hours over 100 both nights for the first time ever
at Chez TOad/4. Worked a decent amount of JAs on 40 & 20, too, incl a pretty
loud opening on 20 ~04Z Sat night. Despite noticing that the K-index jumped to
4, stayed up all night Sat and was rewarded with some pretty good hours to EU on
20 pre-SR, then being fresh meat, some 200+ rates on 15 for a while. Also being
fresh meat on 10, went there a few times, but sigs were significantly weaker for
all but the southern and western EUs. Barely eked out a few UR and RA there,
and the rate was lower, so concentrated on 15 for much of Sunday. Went to 20
once 15 slowed down and the rate sustained longer than expected. Took quick
passes thru 10 & 15 to fill in some easy missing mults, then finally at around
2130Z, I pulled the plug.

Rates were good enough that the SO2R stuff wasn't missed much, although that
would've enhanced an already FB weekend.

Congrats to the many big scorers and thanks to every DX station who made the
time to get on the air! I look forward to the SSB weekend in less than
2 weeks.

73, Dan
