Holy Mosquitoes!

First, thank you to KL7AA and the Radio Clubhouse for the use of the equipment
and of special note and thanks to Corliss (AL1G) and Chris (KL9A) for the use
of Frank's cabin (KL7FH) west about 50 miles from the famous Dan Robbins, KL7Y
QTH.

What a treat to be able to operate last minute from such a quiet location, no
pun intended ;-)

If you are familiar at all with the write ups from KL7Y, WL7E, NL7G, KL9A,
etc., from years ago you will recall and well know about the very quiet (we
hear all of you working guys) and dismal conditions. This was the weekend for
it! I have read a few northern (KL7, VE7, W7) stations remarks and the common
thread is "worst ever conditions" "...results" -- I can
second that.

306 and 6 Q's in 24 hours with Stacked Yagis!

The KL7AA loaned station consisted of a K3, microKeyerII, Bencher, and Heil
headset. It truly was plug and play. Thank you to them.

KL7AA.NET for more info on what this club is doing. Huge state, very few
people and talent to cover it. Lots of potential here for this club.

KL7FH Memorial Station is a three-stack of TH7s, and a Hi-Tower for 40/80 and a
QTH I understand well based on years at KL7Y. This QTH could be even better.

HOLY MOSQUITOS STORY:

To bring the mosquitoes comment full circle for those of you untested in the
land of marsh and summer in the north, do imagine this:

You are walking in to a remote cabin after loading your arms with firewood from
the truck in a winter wonderland in January at midnight, the dry snow blizzard
is blowing hard so thick it is like a smoke following you in the the doorway
blowing and sending white flakes throughout the couch, chairs, flood of the
lights and the rest of the the room, the radio weather man can be heard from
within the cabin alerting the residents of this rural region of the major storm
clamping down with a vengeance, and to take cover NOW...

Now, translate this to IARU.

First - You are in the truck with the windows sealed tight and find yourself
focusing on strategy for the shortest path from the truck to that door 15 feet
away! You realize the plastic tub behind the seat will expose your bare legs
below the shorts for the few seconds it takes to lean over and pull that tub to
your arms. The bug "dope" is applied. You calculate the time it
takes to unlock the door for the first time ever (it's not your cabin) as you
open the door and re-think "where did I miss with the bug dope?" --
maybe the neck line or the back of my arms!

You hoist the tub, slam the door, waddle to the door (as you are carrying a
power supply, HF radio and peripherals) and softly drop the tote below the door
knob. You look swat the "birds" around your head while reaching with
the other hand into your right pocket for a quick grab on the key and pull out
a golden key, slide it in and the door opens. Quickly you lift the tote, take
two steps into the cabin and turn to slam the door!

As you do in slow motion you see the CLOUD of mosquitoes flood into the cabin
with you just like that snow storm of dry cold-smoke of snow flakes. 100's or
more are now in the cabin with you while you set up for... IARU!

Welcome to summer in Alaska, where many say it is the worst mosquito year in
memory, apparently they work in tandem with the universal ionospherics.

Have a great summer,
