Comments:

A fantastic weekend!
I will try and provide as much detail as possible for traveling teams and
rookie volunteers in 2014.

The listed operators were involved in complete setup and tear-down of the W1EQ
and W1UJ WRTC 2014 test session in Wrentham, Massachusetts. K1RAX and K1ZE
operated from W1EQ/WRTC entirely, and included as part of the WRTC/Barnstormer
Team.

N1WK K1EBY and W1UJ picked up the equipment for field deployment early Friday
Morning and arrived on-site (W1UJ/WRTC) at 0915EST. Figuring out layouts and
new tools brought the complete install time to ~1300EST when we started at the
W1EQ site- Around the same time K1RAX brought back a Party Pizza and Grinders
for an important lunch.
The W1EQ/WRTC site was complete at 1500EST.

**Packet was used** We were connected to the KB1H Cluster Node, and I must
admit- Skimmer has better accuracy than the human skimmer, Almost like there
were purposeful bad spots, this seems like an excellent way to 1) discourage
packet use and 2) catch cheaters that log calls and not listen for accuracy.
Another disadvantage with packet is wasting time in the packet pile-up trying
to compete with QRO stations from the field with 100w.

Packet use was decided when an internet connection/air card was necessary to
provide Dave KM3T access to a local computer for remote control and access to
the Rasberry Pi hardware that was responsible for score reporting. The fix came
to us past midnight EST, but it remained failure-free for the duration.

Radios; 2x K3 and 2 Lenovo Laptops running N1MM WRTC Test version.
A WRT54g was used to wirelessly network the 2 computers. Security was used on
the wireless link. Both laptops' and a spare had static DHCP leases programmed
against their Network card MAC addresses. The RasPi with WRTCware was plugged
into a LAN connector. This network was error free for the duration of the
event.

One Laptop was Window 7 and the other was XP, both running N1MM Logger. Both
K3's had serial PTT and both had USB-RS232 GUC232a adapters. Full sized
keyboards were used and no mice, the laptops had touch-pads if mouse action was
req'd. Every couple of hours, there would need to be a 'reset radios' sent to
N1MM since the freq on the PC would be off 5khz or off many MHz on different
bands. This may have been RF, but it was random and both stations exhibited
the same symptoms on any band.
I feel if it was RF it was from the 'other' stations TX.

For antenna switching- A KK1L Relay box and controller with clearly labeled
manual switching rotary knobs and indicator lamps- The unused relay terminals
are terminated automatically with 51 ohm resistors. The Dunestar triplexer and
filters were used- K1ZE observed a 20-30 watt output loss through the
Triplexer/filters- at W1EQ/WRTC- I did lose some pileups to WRTC test stations
not using the triplexer/filters and lost at least one multiplier that could not
hear me but heard another WRTC station- I am not saying 100% that it was the
filters, it just felt that way after K1ZE's report----

On initial installation of the relay box, the barrel-type power jack failed and
we hard-wired 12vdc directly under the hood of the controller switch.

The antennas worked well. The tribander has large front to side and small
front to back. Perfect for this operation. The sides null some loud signals,
including other WRTC test station nearby. Could see K9ES/WRTC, and scared you
when we found his frequency, but the K3 kept all of that to a minimum= awesome
Rig!

The 80m and 40m antennas were about 2' apart while perpendicular to each other.
While rigs were on 80m and 40m, the HIGH RFI on the K3 would alert and if both
rigs were transmitting, the SWR would spike. Additional filtering may be
necessary on the low bands. Again, K3 rig powered us through this.

OK now the K3 failure and overview of events (W1UJ's Perspective (FOOD!))
Friday we setup and late-night troubleshoot with KM3T. The W1UJ camper was
on-site which provided shelter and a (poor) night's sleep for about 3 hours.
(Sunburn and snoring ham pileup!) N1WK cooked Eggs and hot sausage on the grill
for breakfast KB1H had the much needed Box O' Joe. the contest starts and we
take off running. All of us in the same boat with unofficial heat exhaustion
and little sleep, but we hoped to have alternating shifts. W1UJ and NB1U
started and switched around as needed rotating in NR1X K1EBY KB1H- NB1U
operated from K6ND/WRTC in the afternoon and N1WK and KB1H took a chance for
fresh showers and outside commitments for a few hours. K1EBY hooked us up with
local deli's roast beef sandwiches for lunch. This left NR1X, K1EBY and W1UJ to
power through the afternoon and evening- Having my first break when KB1H and
N1WK returned with some of the best Sirloin steaks and Potato salad ever! I
took this opportunity to lay down for some rest- was very nice for about 1.5
hours when I was somehow notified my K3 RX was dead! It was having intermittent
problems throughout the day requiring power cycling- etc (ERR00005 I/O error....
etc..) I worked every angle I remembered up to the 'Factory reset' option. I
did not have or remember the filters and in what slot they were in for a full
re-program, downloaded the manual and started looking... Could not get it to
work- A call to my XYL, Shana and request her to go out to the shack and fire
up the home shack computer= we were able to retrieve the latest
firmware/settings backup through remote control/logmein and email myself the
file (2hours KB1H and W1UJ working on this Sat night), loaded it up and the rig
remained error and failure free for the rest of the event. Continued to operate
through the night with KB1H until I had to crash about 330a after I hit a wall.
The rest of the event was a single operator with some rotation of OPs.

Tear down was very hot and humid, and we were all beat up. It went well as we
took care to preserve materials provided with notes on how they were packaged.
The WRTC was packed into various vehicles N1WK, NB1U, K1EBY, NR1X and W1UJ had a
convoy back to the WRTC warehouse site about 25 minutes away- W1UE's streamlined
receiving system had us all home about noon on Sunday, even a quick rendezvous
through Mendon MA to return borrowed equipment from K5ZD. When I sat down to
catch-up with XYL Shana, she said we were in the middle of a conversation when
I just stopped talking- woke up after 2 hours to wash away the layers of
bug-spray and sunblock.

--Additional notes for the future operators and volunteers---
I found a tic on me Friday night and the mosquitoes were very bad. A good
insect repellent is mandatory for your health.
--The sun is intense this time of year in New England. Although there was
overcast clouds while installing on Friday, I have a horrible and painful
sunburn. It effected my operating and could have been much worse if I did not
apply the NR1X supplied 50spf sunblock when he noticed I was red/purple.
We were much more fortunate to have mild WX conditions for the weekend while
Sunday was similar to the heat of the 2012 test, one team-mate was pointing out
his cramps and NR1X immediately suggested to drink some water and eat something
sometimes water is not enough and additional energy/vitamin drinks or food
mixed in are important along with the water.

It is important to keep an eye on your teammates. If NR1X didn't just throw me
the tube of sunblock and tell me To put it on, to telling members to drink more
water, to telling teammates to take a break. Knowing when your body tells you
that it is time to get in the shade and sit down will make for a much more
tolerable, and survivable weekend. This sunburn really stinks.

Finally, It is hard to describe how much fun it is going to battle in the field
or at the KB1H Barn with this Barnstormer Team. Sgt N1WK with the largest
contribution, effort, and drive while Capt KB1H brings us all together and all
working in the trenches with soldiers NR1X K1RAX K1EBY NB1U and W1UJ make it
all worth it.

Thanks for reading, I feel like a rock star.
