In these days of widespread pre-fill use, whatever happened to 'COPY WHAT YOU
HEAR' ???

I was on my K6VVA/KL7 IOTA NA-050 Expedition on Barter Island wayyyyy up at the
top of Alaska not far from the Canadian border. Completely forgot about the
NAQP CW Contest until N6RO informed me I was QRM'ing the 'Practice' session on
Thursday Night (on the, umh, err, main 20m IOTA Frequency). So I made a mental
note to fire up as KL8C for a bit on Saturday to hand out the AK Mult.

My thought was to use 'LOCUST' as the KL8C name, but then decided on an Native
Inupiat name/term based upon my experience in Kaktovik, which seemed
appropriate for the QTH (MONSTER GRIN HERE :^)

Again, whatever happened to 'COPY WHAT YOU HEAR' ???

Only K4RO, W9WI & K0OU seemed to copy what they heard out-of-the-gate,
whereas almost everyone else asked for 'NAME?' repeats at least 3 or more
times. I think some guys just ended up blowing me off with a 'TU' and I'll
probably get some NIL's.

I had cranked down my TS-480HX to 100w and CQ'd and CQ'd with only 2
respondents. That's when I decided to go looking for stronger signals CQ'ing
themselves. It was still a chore. Condx were sagging (ultimately K=5 on
Sunday which left me with dead bands at 70 Degrees North Latitude). Also got
some kind of nasty flu bug and my last two days there, and the 24 hour travel
home on 4 planes and airport layovers invovled was absolutely miserable.

Other than that, the trip was a success with over 3,400 Q's in the log (all but
140 on CW), and many 'Happy (IOTA) Campers' around the World who needed IOTA
NA-050.

FYI, Katktovik, Alaska (on Barter Island), is the 'Polar Bear Viewing Capital'
of the U.S. (Alaska). I found out why during my trip.

73 & Tnx for the Q's & the Mults.

Rick, K6VVA * The Locust
(KL8C Trustee)

P.S. Remember always: COPY WHAT YOU HEAR !!!
