Just incredible. Conditions definitely rank up there with the 1988 and 1990 CQWW
Phone weekends, which were my milestones for "best ever CQWW Phone
conditions". However, the activity level is at least double what it was
20+ years ago. That's great when you can carve out a run frequency, but a bear
when you live out west and are trying to find a hole on 15 meters in the
morning when the party has already been in full swing for 2 hours.
Despite SO2R, I needed a relatively slow rate to take advantage of it. My
single-op brain can handle only so much input when the rate is 150+ per hour,
the run frequency is being challenged by QRM, and there are 4 simultaneously
open bands. I left a lot on the table, especially on 40 and 20 meters.
20 meters continues to be challenging here in southwest New Mexico. Too much
absorption to work Europe in the afternoon. It was open all night to at least
southern Europe, but a single 5 element yagi just doesn't cut it. On the bright
side, I had a great 45 minute run from 1030Z-1115Z Saturday morning. Clear
frequency, and every European calling seemed to be S9+ Then, as fast as it
started, it was gone. That accounted for 30% of my total 20 meter QSO's.
Where were all the VK6's this weekend ? Worked a total of one, meaning I missed
Zone 29 on every other band. Also, no VK or ZL on 80, which is unusual. Maybe
condx weren't so hot down south ?
