For the second year in a row, George K5TR and I had some fun as multi-single in
this one. The high bands really cooperated with some fine conditions, which
more than offset lighter numbers on the low bands.
As George drove up to the station on Friday afternoon, he noticed that the 4-el
40M yagi was free-wheeling in the Texas breeze. Was this really happening? At
about 90 minutes before the 0000Z start, George climbed the tower for a closer
look. The robust prop-pitch rotor had sheared at the top clamp - but
fortunately the feedline loop was not damaged. A temporary line was connected
to the beam, and eventually tied off facing NE ... after some serious chainsaw
work to remove a few pesky cedar trees that were blocking the line's path. We
came in and sat down at the radio with about 5 minutes to spare before the
start.
Oh, yes ... right after the contest, George made another climb to secure the
beam to the tower. The job was finished right at local sunset, and thankfully,
the chainsaw wasn't needed.
Even with those unforeseen events before and after the contest, we had good
time.
