A big thanks to Tim, K3LR, for hosting me for a 15M single band effort.
I love these summer conditions from the Northern Hemisphere when the high bands
are in good shape. This year did not disappoint (let's forget about last year).
Many hours with all of EU/AS/NA/SA all coming in at the same time. The band
was not quite open around the clock, but it was close.
The variability of HF propagation always amazes me. Some of the more
interesting observations from this weekend:
- Loud JA short path opening from 10-12Z Saturday morning. Europe was very
weak during this period.
- Sunday morning at 10Z: brief, weak long path opening to JA, but EU much
louder on day 2 compared to the same time period on day 1.
- The big gun UA3 stations VERY loud at 03Z on day2. I thought we might get a
real EU sunrise opening, but it was not meant to be. The band was stone dead
90 minutes later.
- The very loud SE Asia/Oceania stations calling in during the main EU
opening.
I referred to the 1999 NU5A(K5GN) breakdown (aren't the 3830 archives great?)
during this operation. What a great effort that was. I now have a better
understanding of why it was the USA 15M record for 15 years.
