With the sunspot number hitting 0 a few days ago, things weren't very
impressive. Nothing on 10 at all, and weak signals on 15/20. Propagation
seemed pretty good but weird, with some stations inaudible that are normally
easily readable. Noise levels were quiet though so not much trouble copying.
Fun though. Working 20/15 with just a dipole is interesting. I even tried
running for a bit, and worked a slow series of NA contacts. One surprise was
being called by HL5FAM on 15 and S52X on 20.
Once the sun went away, 40 was pretty good. 80 OK but disappointing - not
many stations. Perhaps the late sunsets have most people gone to bed before it
gets dark here at the far edge of the continent.
Winter is coming! More darkness will make my dipole more useful. I guess I
really need a better antenna for 15/20, especially with the sunspot cycle about
to nose dive....
