Comments:
Thanks to Pat, W5WMU and Alice for being wonderful hosts for my week at
their W1WMU QTH in eastern Maine, right on the VE9 border.
The 4 days leading up to the contest included a major winter storm that left
others without power, but thankfully ours stayed on. It did leave a sheet of
ice on top of the snow and rendered some work like finishing the Beverage
impossible.
Thanks to Array Solutions for shipping out an 8-pak on short notice and to its
manufacturer K7MI for sharing the secret to making the control boxes work.
That unit made switching the vast array of antennas much easier.
However, we had numerous issues with feedlines and a number of antennas were
just not available for the contest, including the 40M 4-square and four fixed
beams.
In addition, I could not get Pat's new DX Doubler to work with N1MM, despite
the efforts of a number of folks. When I went to swap in the N4TB custom SO2R
box, I discovered that the TSA gorillas must have done something to kill it
completely. So, I used the DXD in manual mode pretty well until Saturday night
when...
...I managed to xmit into one of the K3s. Unlike every other rig I've owned
which has a bank of band buttons to push, the K3 forces its op to cycle through
the bands to reach the desired band. So when I went from 40 to 160, I switched
first to 80 while the other rig was xmitting there. The effect was adding
about a 40 dB attenuator, but in my early morning foggy state of mind, I just
thought that the bands were exceptionally quiet until I finally realized what
happened. That was the rig that I was using on 160 the second night, so that
explains the 16 QSOs there when others successfully ran. Oh well.
This was my first time in front of a K3 since using W8JI's on 160. The first
night felt like I was in quicksand since I just wasn't as adept with it as my
own rigs. When CW5W went UP 1 on 80, it took several minutes to solve that
little puzzle. I think that by Sunday, the one remaining K3 felt pretty
comfortable, though. Was really worried about the QRQ CW problem, but spending
lots of time above that speed, nobody commented, so perhaps it works fine with
the N1MM software.
A number of huge scores have already been posted, with a few more to come.
Congrats in advance to K0DQ for the win that he has been anticipating for many
years (assuming K3CR(LZ4AX) didn't wax us all!) and to K1DG for finding and
milking the 160 opening that he did. Kudos to W1KM for learning SO2R and
returning to the higher echelon. The continued superb scores from N2IC and
N9RV from so far west are terrific. WA1Z's LP score with a modest station is
just phenomenal. KudoS also to K5GN for a wonderful effort from A7.
Many have commented on the superb condx. Oddly, I didn't feel that way. I
thought condx were above average, but the absence of 20M at night way up here
made it feel like a weekend of much lower flux. I think I went to 10M way too
late for JAs et al, not taking into account the much earlier sunset in Maine
vs. back home in FL. In fact, only 35 JAs made it into my log on all bands.
A quick RBN analysis seems to show that the EU fixed antennas get out fine.
The only rotatable antenna is a small tribander at 55', so I definitely
suffered in other directions, though.
It was good to join the 5000-QSO club, but disappointing to not reach 10M pts.
Considering this was my first SO in W1 since 1990, I may have underestimated
the need to re-evaluate strategy. Nonetheless, it was a really fun weekend and
I again thank Pat & Alice for the invitation.
Additional thanks:
- Warren, KA1NFF for providing connectors that would have gotten the Beverage
going, but more importantly for showing me how persistence and a good attitude
can really help one overcome adversity (in his case, ALS).
- Bob, N6TV for some K3 tips
- Allegiant for placing me in boarding Zone 5 today for the flight home
- Everyone for the QSOs. It was neat to work so many 5-banders.
Happy Holidays and very 73, Dan
