Applied lessons learned from Summits on the Air to put up a temporary antenna
when QRV at XYL's uncle's house in MN. A quarter wave matching network served
double duty to augment a 50 foot coax that routed the transmission line through
the garage. A large party balloon held up the apex of an inverted Vee above the
snowy pine trees. Tied off the Vee using a long pole a third of the way down
for stability in the breeze. The antenna was end fed and the other end was
trimmed for resonance at 1833 kc. The set-up was completed before local sunset
Saturday and torn down at 3 AM Sunday as we departed.
Poor band conditions and local noise made for low rates. Thanks to all for
patiently copying the 100 watt signal and for all the fills. Worked both
coasts and AZ.
Used occasion to demonstrate amateur radio to friends and family as XYL held an
open house. Turned up the volume on the rig and ran the last few hours,
literally running downstairs to answer calls. Guests followed along on the
stations worked. Thanks to Radio City, a local ham radio shop, for stocking
450 ohm ladder line and parts at reasonable cost as well as providing
information on local VE testing and classes, which was handed out to interested
guests.
Finally the look on my XYL's face was priceless when she saw the giant latex
balloon that just barely fit into the car. Her complement, “you know that
this will go down among the crazier things you've done."
