Comments:

Wow! What crappy conditions! At least it looks like I'm not the only one whose
performance took a hit from the CME...

One station in TX tried to push me to 10 for a Q, but 10 was deader than a
doornail, so needless to say, that didn't happen. I checked 15 a couple times
out of youthful optimism (Even at 40, I still consider myself a youth), but
that also didn't pan out, so I stuck to 20. For the first hour and a half, 20
was really hard going. Tough to find stations, and when I did, the QSB was
horrific--S9 to ESP in 30 seconds or less! I had to take a break for family
time, but came back and checked 40, since I had already worked everyone I could
hear on 20. Finished the night on 40, though one station asked me ( and a few
others) to go to 80, where he sounded great, but by the sounds of his constant
"CQing in our faces", he wasn't hearing a thing. Though 40 isn't a
strong band for me (HOA-friendly antennas do NOT equal 40M-friendly antennas),
I managed to not only log a handful of QSOs, but I even decided to try a run
for the last 20 minutes. This is something I have NEVER done in a contest thus
far. Yes, I said it--I've never attempted a run. Why not? Well, as I
mentioned earlier, I have HOA-friendly antennas--no tower, no beam, and no
amplifier. I haven't thought that I had any OOMPH to manage a run or hold a
frequency. I made a calculated wager tonight that with conditions the way they
were today, points would be comparatively scarce, and even some big guns may be
tempted to S&P to find some new ones near the tail end of the contest. So,
I picked an open freq, and started CQing. Granted it was only a 20 minute run,
and I only picked up 3 stations, but I now know that feeling you get when a
booming signal comes out of the noise answering YOUR CQ!! How awesome! Made
me wish this was a longer contest!!

Thanks for all the Qs!
