Comments:
The string of years of being lucky with the weather on CQWW contest weekends
came to an end this year as the hurricane remnants caused torrents of rain and
huge winds all weekend. Antennas were slow to turn in the wind and rain static
rendered the high antenna useless much of the time. It was a good weekend to
give the assisted category a try. I ended the weekend feeling like I couldn't
"get out" like I am used to. I called 2 VUs and XV endlessly without
results. I ended the weekend feeling like I had spent WAY too much time chasing
mults and not CQing, however, much of the time CQing was slow too. I spent
time learning to use the packet window. I set it to 10m only and mults only
for the first day. By Sunday, I had learned to "Blacklist" the huge
number of continuing bad spots that showed up as mults. During the slow CQ
response periods on Sunday, I unchecked the "mults only" window and
blacklisted the US stations and bad spots. I was able to pop on to a new
station and work it during CQing and increase the rate. It was a lot more
interesting than endlessly CQing while playing Solitare in the unassisted
category.
