Hi,

After a splendid CQ WW RTTY with a new claimed WR 80m QRP, time for the SSB
part. Before the contest my tuner and headset were broken, early visits from
Murphy. Tnx to some clubmembers (ON7GR, ON5DEW, ...), I was able to
participate. Some days before the contest I received a tex message from OQ5M
who wanted to know what my plans were. I told him that I wouldn't participate
the whole contest (to intensive) and that the conditions were bad. The focus
was on 80/40m.

I started on 80m and after one hour I had 40 QSO's, 20 QSO's less then two
years ago, not the best sign. Anyway I was able to work (for 80m) a lot of USA
stations. I know 13 is nog much, but with a dipole and operating under 3.700
(because of my band restrictions I could live with it). One USA, NN1N came back
to my CQ, I askes him for a real signal report and he told me that I was indeed
59, nice. Really strange that nobody came back on my CQ for minutes after that
QSO :-)
Another nice moment was when CN2AA responded my CQ, unbelievable score, worked
them on 4 bands. Around 6 UTC I went to 40m and worked their some DX. The
noiselevel on that band was high and I haven't found a clear spot, so I went to
15m and did some S&P, Asia was coming through. Worked JA5FDJ and a lot of
other Asiatic Russians, nice!
With low expectations I went to 10m and I must say I was surprised. During the
CQ WW RTTY the band was so quiet, not this time. Worked JF9JTS, nice DX QSO
with not the best antenna. Then did some S&P on all bands, worked mostly
Europe.
After some sleep I tried 10m, wanted to log USA stations, worked sations like
K9CT, N3RS, ..., but also LT1H, PX5E, ...
Went back to 80m; it was hard, most of stations were calling CQ above 3.700.
Most of the time I was the only stations between 3.600 and 3.700, some guys
came back but nobody putted me on the cluster (would have helped). Anyway when
the night wore on the rates became higher, higher then the opening hour, nice.
Around 2 UTC I went to bed for three hours, I was tired. After the break I
called CQ on 80m and did some S&P on 40m. Then I saw on the cluster that
KL7RA was loud on 20m. Called him but he ended with 0H6AI, some minutes later
ON3DI was in the log. A big difference with two years ago when I was able to
work him with my first call. I went again to 15m and 10m who was quite busy.
Some signals were really weak, but workable. CX2DK was one of them. After some
breaks I went to 20m, heard an incredible strong AH2R but he couldn't hear me,
pitty. Anyway was long time ago that I worked a JA on 10m, 15m and 20m in one
contest.
I wanted at least 100 QSO's on each band, the moment I achieved that I went
again to 80m untill the end. The last hours were fantastic, during the most
contests the rates reduce at the end but not this time. I've been spot a few
times (tnx ON6AT!), the last 4 hours I had 150 QSO's, nice for my station!
A bit pitty that an Italian station called CQ on my frequency, so I lost the
fun part...

The goal was 650 QSO's all band and a decent result on 80m, I achieved both.
Although I have some mixed feelings. Happy with the result and the last hours
but if I hadn't slept that much I would have had 1000 QSO's, always a nice
target, maybe next year...

Conditions were better then expected but not super on all bands.
Working conditions; FT897, 50w, dipole for 80m and verticals for 40m, 20m, 15,
and 10m. Logging with N1MM+.

Thanks for all the QSO's!
Thanks for all the spots (especially SK3W, my friends from Sweden).
Thanks to my parents for everything.

Next goal is CQ WW CW, will try to call CQ with a speed of 15-20 WPM, one of my
macro's will definitly be QRS ;-)

73,

Pieter ON3DI
