Comments:

Conditions to the Western US presented lots of challenges this year. Solar
activity was low but the solar wind speed and proton density increased greatly
during the contest period. Only a few brief openings to zones 14 and 15 from
out west. Openings from the southern and much less disadvantaged central and
eastern US to Europe were discouraging to say the least. Several RBN receivers
showed 40db signal to noise difference between east of Rockies and the western
side a distance of 500 miles.

Some fairly rare multipliers like the PZ5 took hours to work due to
thunderstorms activity and antennas pointed for long periods at Europe. Central
America and Northern South America stations had lots of QRN.

This year JA activity was much lower than last year. It is almost like they
have a code of honor for their sincere contest entries. Asian stations in
general were weak and notables of the band were absent excepting YBK. It was
difficult to work KL7 and UA0 as their signals were attenuated to just above
the noise floor.

You can add another 7-8 zones and 20 countries to the list above in heard but
not worked. All in all, a good effort but score was not even close to previous
contests. All the variables above are what 160m is about. I managed some good
sleep and some new catches as well. May the solar Gods cooperate better next
year!

73, Bob W7RH
