Comments:
I can not express the gratitude I feel towards station owner Tariq, N2QV, and
Chief Station Engineer WU2X. I've known Scott, WU2X, for several years through
the collaboration of 2X Arrays and Cycle 24 on the TX38 tribander that was
designed specifically for the WRTC 2014 event. Scott's attention to detail on
the TX38 tribander and his desire to make everything on that antenna as great
as possible was a real indication to me that he was changing the game in
triband antenna design. For the longest times, tribanders have had the
reputation as an inferior antenna as compared to monobanders, and for good
reason. Lossy traps and poor electrical design ended up in a very compromised
antenna across the three major HF bands. Scott's use of custom software led
him to design triband Yagis that in everyway are on par with monoband Yagis of
the same boom length.
What an incredible opportunity to get to use the N2QV station. It is the most
efficient design I've ever seen with some incredible gain on 10-40 meters.
Recent changes to the location of the radio shack allowed approximately 1500'
of coax loss to be eliminated from the 4 high stack of 36' triband Yagis. This
translated to around 3dB on 10 meters, 2 dB on 15 meters, and 1dB on 20 meters.
During the fall season a new two high stack of 4 element 40 meter JK Grande
beams were installed at 175' and 110'. N2QV and WU2X worked hard to add a few
receive antennas including a custom triband vertical for the contest. They
also installed a T vertical hung from some trees to use for the transmit
antenna on 160 meters.
So I knew going into the contest that there could be no excuses of being to far
away from Europe (read, "in Arkansas") or not being loud enough.
The contest went by in a blur. Maybe I will do a KQ2M style writeup on my
website soon (www.zf2dx.com). I felt LOUD on all bands except 160. Anytime a
band change was made an instant pileup ensued. Anytime I found a big pileup it
was easily broken. At times it almost felt like cheating being so loud into
Europe and always having a steady stream of callers. Going into the contest,
my major concern was being on the right band at the right time. I soon
realized that all I needed to do was follow the zone 16 stations. Wherever
Russia was loudest, that was the band to be on. It was a nice surprise to be
able to run JA on 40 meters and to also have some deep Asia stuff call me such
as Zones 24, 26, and 28. Both Saturday and Sunday evening I was also able have
a decent run of JA and Asia stations on 20 meters. I couldn't believe it when I
found 3B9HA on the second radio on 40 meters at 2:30 PM local time. He had a
big pile of EU stations, but after one call I was able to make it into his log.
160 meters was a struggle and I was getting beat out by zone 4 guys on a
regular basis. I stuck with it and kept calling guys and finally the band
improved just enough on Saturday night that I was able to get through to all of
the big gun EU stations. I knew I'd be lagging behind the W1 guys on 160 but I
was hoping that I could make up the multiplier difference across the other 5
bands.
Thanks again to Tariq for the wonderful hospitality and such a pleasurable
experience. More information on his station can be found on his QRZ page. It
was great fun hanging out with WU2X before the contest and getting to do some
antenna work with him. Both of these guys are great and I really hope I can
have the experience of operating from this amazing station again.
On another note, what an amazing score from ZF2MJ! I think it is really cool
how he came out and detailed exactly how he prepared for and operated the
contest. Definitely a game changer for the serious single op DX guys.
Thanks for all of the Qs and moves.
73,
Kevin N5DX
