Comments:
wow! what a trial by fire! Early Wednesday morning in heavy rain and
high winds the South East screw in guy anchor failed toppling a 40'
AB-577 Mil Surplus Mast, destroying the TH3-MK4 tribander. So, we are
now two days before the contest and I have no 10M antenna! I spend
Thursday in the cold and rain disassembling the mess, getting it all
reorganized to go back up, install the mast in a slightly different
location, screw each guy anchor straight down till the eye is just
above the ground (not like the ARMY manuals says, aiming the guy
towards the tower). As the sun fades the lower elevator section and
all the guys are up and ready for an antenna to lift. Friday Morning
in blowing winds and snow flurries I dig my old homebrew 4ele DK7ZB
design 10M monobander and reassemble it. Stealing the boom from the 6M
beam I start attaching elements straight from the specs off the web
page via my smartphone. I Attach the feed & secure all connections.
Walking it over to the AB-577 Mast I hoist it up with relative ease,
install it pointed north, hook up a fresh feedline and weatherproof
the connection. Testing it at 12 feet, it looks like it will play just
fine. As the sun fades I finish raising it to 25', gather up the tools
and stagger indoors, frozen stiff and very tired. Oh look the contest
started 45 mins ago... the conditions are not very good. I manage to
eek out 11 Qs before the band is completely dead. The next day all the
work pays off as I am able to easily run stations on phone and CW with
relative ease while holding my frequency as long as I wish (one time
for 3 1/4 hours) & end the day just short of 500 Qs & 110 Mults. 5:30
AM Sunday morning, the band is popping in and out on 10M CW Meteor
Scatter (MS) and long haul ground wave making it easy to work several
close in mults that are impossible on F2 propagation. Then the F2
hits around 6:46 AM but I cant seem to get any traction... so I off to
have some breakfast, hot tea and toast, coming back to a much better
band. I do my best to hang in there but my brain is not into it yet...
another break for brunch and more tea. When I come back I am finally
able to once again work anyone w/relative ease. Tuning around a while
I chase mults & then start CQing again, this time I get replies. From
noon till the end of the contest at 4PM, I do my best to run rate and
and set a goal of breaking 700 Qs. As the contest ends its harder
to find active stations but I do manage to eek out out enough Qs to
meet my goal... Barely! Not bad for not having an antenna 3 days ago!
When all is said and done I managed to keep my fat old butt in the
chair a bit over 12 hours. Thanks to all who worked me!
