M/2 was the original plan for this contest but I got too busy to organize an
effort and didn't hear from anyone else.
I was too late to sign up for an NCCC team by the time I decided for sure that
I'd try to get on. K6TJ was at the W6YX shack when I arrived. Pete was
interested in how I got set up for the contest so I explained step-by-step what
I was doing, slowing the set-up in the process.
I'd hoped to use SO2R but time was running out and I wasn't sure I'd be able to
configure the second sound card in the computer I was using. So I decided to
start with a single K3 and re-evaluate my options after my first break.
After a few minutes of operating I set up a decoder on the second VFO of the K3
so that I could S&P while running on the main VFO. I hadn't done this in 2
or 3 years and it took a long time to get it all set up, on the fly while I was
running. It was much harder to tune in signals on the second VFO than I'd
remembered and after struggling to find and make 2 S&P QSOs I took my first
break to set up SO2R at 1:12 into the contest.
I turned on a second computer and FT1000MP for SO2R, with Writelog's software
lockout. This was my first experience with RTTY SO2R. It really boosted the
rate, particularly when dual CQing.
Since I had the decoder set up on the K3's sub-RX I tried to S&P while
running on both radios but it became apparent that this was very difficult to
do and I only made a few QSOs, mostly when by accident the sub-RX VFO was
sitting on a frequency where I saw something printing.
If I had started with SO2R I'm guessing I'd have made 40 to 50 more Qs and been
close to Jeff/WK6I's score from W7RN. As it was I'm glad I had the opportunity
to try RTTY SO2R.
