This was an experimental operation. I was erecting antennas till late Friday
night and had caught cold as well so had no energy to undertake a serious 48h
SOAB effort. Conditions promised to be poor as well so decided to try first
time LP which would presumably require less energy (less Qs) and allow some
hours of sleep without big damage. I was also quite interested to see what
score is obtainable in my station with punctual 100W.
Well, what a choice of time for LP!:) I had already lost 90% of my voice by
midway yelling for hours into the microphone hoping it would help to get any
attention of those low band 59+ eastern multipliers like numerous YB's, B's,
etc on 40m. Well, it did not help. How frustrating to hear all those strong
stations including southern EU mults on 160 CQing into your face. The Aurora
curtain surely made things worse.
Only very agressive QSYs and 2nd radio operation helped to get the multiplier
count to acceptable level. Over 1000 2nd Radio S&P QSOs in the log.
High bands were luckiliy providing at least quite good rates to EU when NA and
JA were completely missing. Was lucky to hear finally a few JA's on Sunday and
quite accidentally catch JH4UYB for double mult late on Sunday on 20m. Missed
JA on 40m althouth heard a few. Screamed myself almost to death trying to catch
the attention of 59 JA3YBK calling CQ split on 80M with no answers. Nothing...
15M was horrible to west. Nothing up from zone 9 ever heard till late Sunday
night when the magic 21z 30 minute opening gave over 10 US stations and other
mults. Some guys were 59 20+ to dissapear soon into an empty band. Amazing.
Heard Ramon XE1KK answering to EU runners but never caught him. Only XE ever
heard during the weekend.
And when 15m fun was over 20M opened for a good hour over the pole for me.
First time in the contest I got US answers to my CQ!:) And now they said great
signal:)
Only US heard and worked on 40M was W3LPL Saturday after my sunrise. No US
heard on 80M.
Best low band ears award goes to V47T for sure. They heard me right away on 40
and 80m! Exceptional!
There were some magic moments though like getting a call from 5A1AL on 15m and
several other goodies.
And several very nice multiband QSYs. OY1OF calling in late on Sunday on 20m
resulted in 5 band mult as his 160m antenna was broken. He first thought trying
15m is pointless but when we moved to the totally empty band he was 59+60!! The
biggest signal of the contest. And then 59+40 on emtpy 10m. Simply amazing.
15m H Frame proved very useful for working central EU till late on Sunday. Just
kept it on 230-240 degrees and logged a constant stream of DL's, OK's, etc for
several hours when nothing else was producing.
