Comments:

The last two years I have gotten the opportunity to operate the
contest as a guest op at N9RV (2014) and W6NL (2015). That was great
fun and I hope to do more of that in the coming years. But this year
I decided to stay home. No new hardware at the station - but I have
been busy fixing some antenna switching issues and amplifier T/R
relay issues that have popped up. I got the last fixes finished by
Saturday morning and was ready for the start of the contest.
These repairs held up for the duration of the SS - so I think we are
in good shape for the CQ WW CW contest this coming weekend.

There are lots of fine scores out there. AA5B with is fan dipole and
K3UA low power and low dipole putting in a good signal for hours on 80
metes. In high power N9RV had a big number and was very close the
whole time and I was expecting him and W7WA to get good openings on 15
meters and pass me by on Sunday. But 15 meters just never really
happened.

I got off to a pretty good start - not my best - but better than
average. I started on 15 meters. Not really by plan but that was the
easier place to find a frequency. For many years now I have been
starting these contests by sitting down in the chair a few minutes or
less before the start and finding a frequency often during the first
minute of the contest. This has mostly worked out - I am sure it robs
me of a bigger start out of the gate but it is what I do. It keeps me
from getting upset when my very clear frequency that I had been warming
up for 10 or more minutes gets trashed at the start. I figured that
15 meters would not last too long and I started looking for one on 20
meters after about 35 minutes into the contest. I made the jump to 20
meters at 40 minutes into the contest. 20 meters was pretty good but
and added 349 contacts to the log before I moved to 40 meters (early
for me) at 23:51. I had a good frequency on 40 meters and stayed there
until 08:05z when I took 4 hours off to sleep. During this time I put
an amazing 859 contacts in the log on 40 meters. And I was surprised
to log over 1000 contacts on 40 meters this year - the most I have
ever done on this band in SS. The 40 meter yagi I built and put up a
few years ago really works.

Sunday was a bit of a challenge but I keep plugging away and tried to
keep the rate as high as I could. It mostly settled into about 70 an
hour. I did mange to find a few people to work on the second radio
but this contest is a difficult two radio contest with the long
exchange and being only allowed to work people one time in the
contest.

Speaking of that - it really is one of the great things about this
contest - the fact that you can only work a station once. It makes it
possible for people to use the bands that work best for them - be it
dictated by propagation or antennas or location. It makes it possible
to do well in the SS from all over the country.

I really do love this contest and its long exchange. I have read
though all of the soapbox comments that have been posted so far - some
great stuff in there. K5OT reminded us that this contest started in
the 1930's. This prompted me to pull the K1DG edited CQ Amateur Radio
Almanac off the shelf and read the brief history of the SS. The
exchange started out as passing message traffic. And the message had
to have at least five real words in them! And you think the exchange
is long now - and you could operate up to 90 hours. Now that is a
contest.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Traffic_System

And it is great to read posts from the new folks that did their first
or second SS - and the general excitement of most of them about trying
to work a sweep. I hope you all keep coming back. This year marks
the 37th time (consecutive) that I have operated in the SSB SS. In 1979
I got on and made 834 contacts LP and then tried for several years to
crack into the LP top ten. Some years I would prefer to forget and
others I can remember like it was yesterday. I really enjoy hearing
all of my friends during this event each year.

OK - enough rambling - I think the late hour has me getting
nostalgic.
