What an absolutely incredible experience this was!
Thanks to Kam, N3KS, for all of his hard work before and DURING the contest to
keep things running. The full story will not be told here, but it really is
something to be shared.
The big news of the TI5W operation was Hurricane Otto. In the 150+ years of
recording keeping, no hurricane has ever hit Costa Rica. I had planned on
leaving home at 6pm Wednesday, arriving TI at 1pm on Thursday. Not much time
for prep, but work dictated I had no real choice on Thanksgiving week. On
Monday before the contest the news did not look good for my arrival. Otto was
expected to deliver a direct hit on Liberia mid day on Thursday... exactly my
arrival time. A quick decision was made to try and arrive earlier if possible.
A call to Delta airlines got me on the only available option which was leaving
home at 6pm on Monday. That was only 6 hours away! I made another quick
decision and my boss gave me the go ahead to leave work. The other boss, my
wife, rolled with the change like a pro and I was all set. I heard AB2E was
supposed to be on from the TI5M station, but wisely cancelled his trip due to
Otto. Somehow cancelling the trip never even crossed my mind... only how can I
make it still work? Sometimes a guy needs to step back and put things into
perspective I think. There will be other contests!
This contest started back in July with dual Morse Runner training using DXLog.
The integrated DXLog implementation sounds 100% like the real thing and was a
big part of the competition ramping up. It was great having ZF2MJ, V47T, 8P5A,
CR3OO, NP4DX, P40C, and others all pushing really hard this time. The
competition is truly what keeps things fun.
Before and during the contest was a complete emotional roller coaster. The
computer completely shut off 4 times during the first hour. When the computer
and the right radio totally shut off during the biggest hour of the contest, a
few choice words come out! After the 4th time, it was decided the UPS was
getting overloaded causing the shut down. Moving another computer off the same
UPS fixed the problem, and I was back to the races. It was unfortunate missing
the biggest rate of the contest, but a 356 second hour was still a monster.
Someone will break 400. It will happen. A year ago nobody would expect rates
this big!
Otto wiped out the RX 8 Circle array which was an integral part of Kam's
outstanding WW SSB SB40 effort. It was going to be an "Ace in the
hole" for receiving on the low bands. When a line of thunderstorms rolled
through, the low bands were essentially unusable. I was crushed. Morale was at
an all time low, but I pushed on with the bands I could sort of hear on.
Eventually the storms went away and I could try to catch back up. In a bone
head move, I ran the first *several* hours on 80m while on the 160m antenna.
With so much going on with the dual CQ thing, I missed it. The amp was
handling it just fine so I didn't notice. That probably wasn't a major rate
killer, but it didn't help either.
Having nothing to really compare to, I thought the bands sounded great! Runs
were deep, and signals were loud. Obviously being south was good as we had a
captive audience. Sunday was MUCH worse for me. I couldn't get anything going
on 20m or 15m for what seemed like an eternity. Stayed up for 48 straight, but
about 47 hours op time with the various off times required to keep the station
going. The JA's were seemingly endless on all bands! No JA on 10m, even
though I tried really hard. I worked about 25 the day before the contest on
10m so the hopes were high.

As they say, a picture is worth a thousands words. There is a link in the
article for a GoFundMe page that goes to directly help those affected. Driving
through this on the way to the airport was a very sobering reminder about how
thankful we should all truly be sometimes. Many of the residents lost
absolutely everything they own, including some loved ones. Please keep them in
your thoughts as they continue to dig out and rebuild from a truly historic
event.
Thanks again to the boyz for the intense competition! Congratulations to N6MJ
for what looks like another win from 2 point land. I would much rather be
sitting next to him than operating against him! We are already discussing a
rematch for 2017. Who else will join in?
