Comments:
What great weather for a January contest! It peaked at 60 Degrees on Saturday.
Sunday was very foggy and wet, but less than 10 minutes of rain. With a good
forecast I decided to proceed with plans to put together a 10 band rover and
travel to the 4 local grids in the greater Rochester NY and Fingerlakes area. I
added 5G for the first time, with a 200mW setup into a WiFi antenna. I truly
appreciate the effort of WB2BYP who was the only person in my area to have 5G
and 10G setup and on the air. Best distance on these bands was 40 miles but I
did not have a whole lot of antenna gain (21 dBi on 5G and 17 dBi on 10G). With
a nice 60cm dual band dish I am certain we could do better in the future. We had
a huge turnout for the Rover lunch this year with 9 rovers participating. The
waitress had to keep adding tables as more people showed up (12 total). Several
of the folks were operating single op. stations, but came out for lunch and then
made a whole lot of FM contacts before going home to provide another log for the
contest and the club. My station has grown from a 4-band rover to a 10-band
rover without a whole lot of thought into how it is designed. The “add on”
process over the last year has resulted in several inefficiencies and poor
human factors. The rover is in desperate need of repackaging and adding a
rotor. I am not sure, but I may be running one of the smallest vehicles with 10
bands (Ford Edge). The “Armstrong” method is getting old. Always something
more to do…
