98% search and pounce. Strange band conditions seemed to be in play Friday
night. The band never really picked up. The west coast was tough all night
and never really opened.. Europe was also weak all night. In reality, weak
to unreadable. They really only picked up at their local SR. All in all not
great condx. I was in the chair on and off for ~ 9 hours until about 2 am and
called it quits for the night. I had no hopes of any west opening in the am so
I went to bed. The QSB was really rough at times and you had to wait around
until the sig came back up for either a report or to give one. The second
night, another 9 hours in the chair proved to be much better with many European
10 point stations workable. It is extremely comforting to hear DX up and down
the band instead of all being concentrated in the so called (now defunct) DX
window between 1830 and 1835. A couple of long standing irritations, CQ
machines never and I mean never, pause long enough to see if someone is
calling. If you are not 40 over 9 then why bother. Lastly, when I did run, I
had to constantly switch directions on the rx antennas in order to pick
stations out of the noise. It would sure help if you dumped your call in more
than once instead of just going away because you were not answered immediately.
It is an age old problem and one that I have always had using directional
receive antennas.
My many thanks to Jeff, W2FU for allowing me to use his excellent station.
