The last time that I used my station was during the ARRL RTTY Roundup a month
ago. Everything was already set up for RTTY which saved a lot of configuration
time. In the Roundup contest the only issue that I had was frozen rotators and
higher SWR from the accumulation of ice but the frozen antennas were long gone.
This weekend’s weather was sunny with temperatures around 78 degrees (25 C). I
came up to the shack after having dinner with the XYL and everything seemed to
be in order but I had a horribly slow start. The rates improved as the evening
progressed but the earlier slowness was an indication of things to come. I
guess it was the lack of sunspots, very often throughout the weekend one or
both radios had slower rates than I like. 40m was the money band. I had the
most QSOs on this band and they are worth double points. 20m was my second best
band. It was open solid for long hours however it was very crowded and being low
power I got pushed around by kilowatt stations. About half of my total contacts
were with Europe, the extra points for working other continents really helps
increase the score. I tried to increase my multiplier totals by clicking on
spots when run rates became very slow but very often the spotted station was
either not there or just not readable. I wish that there was a non-assisted
category. While I could have done even better by managing my 18 hours of off
time, I really did not mind sleeping at night and still finishing very early. I
took all of Sunday afternoon and evening off. It was a beautiful day and I used
this time to remove my temporary 80m antennas. My wife and I then had a
fantastic dinner at home, beef sandwiches that we imported from the famous
Portillo’s in Chicago. It was a great weekend! Thanks for the QSOs, please
