Comments:
Operated on a time-available basis starting Saturday morning. The most
interesting aspect of the WPX CW contest was the propagation. Saturday's was
perfectly normal until evening, when signals on 20 meters developed a hollow
echo. Sunday morning the band was almost dead, the result of a CME walloping
the ionosphere to create G3 conditions. The bands did not begin to recover
until Sunday afternoon, revealing some life still in 15 and 10 meters, mainly
through sporadic E and TEP. As we neared the end of the contest, conditions in
the Eastern U.S. had partially recovered but were still only a fraction of
Saturday night's activity levels and skip distances. The Sun had played quite a
nasty trick on the CQ WPX contest.
