Comments:

First time operating from W1 as a single op - Eastport, Maine proved to be an
awesome way to break the ice. Special thanks to Ray (W2RE) and Lee (WW2DX)of
RemoteHamradio.com - the station and equipment worked flawlessly. No equipment
failures in Maine or here in the shack in NC - just an awesome experience!

As many have pointed out, the first 20 hours of the event were excellent. I
started on 40 and 20 meters and stayed that way for the first 3.5 hours. Signal
strength quality was incredible. I went to 80 a bit late but the signals from
Europe were huge from Eastport. The solar storm changed that dramatically the
second night.

I took a 2.5 hour break at little after 2 a.m. local time and returned by 5
a.m. to catch sunrise in Eastport. I had an immediate pileup on 20M and stayed
there for most of the morning and kept hoping for some action on 15. I did get
a decent opening into most of EU and knocked out the majority of my 15M QSOs
between 14-16Z. I was really shocked to be called on 15 by BA, UN, and YB
during that time!

One of the highlights of the contest was during a slow time on 40 meters the
second night when OZ1AA, who stopped here in NC on his bicycle trip around the
world two years ago, called from Kenya. The QSO took several exchanges but it
was worth the thrill - completely floored by that QSO.

The second day was more of grind but 20M provided good rate to USA when using
the large stack (4/4/4). I worked a few EU on 15 the second day but all were
S&P. Managed just 4 Qs on 10 meters and all were logged on Sunday. Twenty
meters finally came around a bit to EU the second day but it was nothing like
the first day. My hopes of a strong finish on 40M with good EU rate were dashed
as well.

Nothing like integrating 1800s technology with modern technology! In the end, a
fantastic time with great competition.

CU in the next one!
