Comments:
100 W, dipoles up 20-30', keyed by hand (mostly iambic keyer, vibroplex for low
bands at night).
Conditions were very good as the contest started, and I began with a run on 10
meters. It's been a while since I've done that in a contest outside the ARRL
10-meter! Even after 10 closed, 15 did well until about 9 PM local, and 20 m
held out pretty late as well. On little sleep, I needed to go to bed
eventually, and hoped the conditions would still be so good in the morning.
They were not, so I caught up on a bit more sleep. After tough sledding to
close out the first 24 hours, the evening grey line brought lots of loud
signals in on 20 meters. I found a frequency and started calling CQ. Two
hours later, I had added more than 100 QSOs to the log. Yes, they were mostly
W/VE contacts, but quite a few were for multipliers and they were almost all
worth some points.
The last twelve hours were again pretty tough overall, with few signals from
outside North America getting through, and even fewer non-W/VE stations who
could hear me. Finally toward the end of the contest, Europe managed to come
through on 20 and 40 m, though not well enough to get into the log.
One of the highlights of the contest was working SV9DJO on 20 m for an all-time
new one. I'd heard that station a few weeks ago and hadn't made it through the
noise, but this week propagation was just a little better and I made it
through!
Compared to last year, I had about 180 more QSOs (up 40%), and the best band
shifted downward: 40 and 20 m picked up more QSOs (especially 20 m), while 15
and 10 m declined. As with last year, I didn't pick up any new entities toward
10 m DXCC, so I remain just short of 100. This year I had more successful runs,
though last year I put in a similar effort at running.
