Comments:
K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. For
June 2017 ARRL VHF only I (N3UM) was available to operate.
I missed the first 1.5 hr. due to a welcome visit from family.
>From 1930-2040, VHF was nearly dead: I got only 8 Qs on 6 m.,
no E skip, 4 Qs each on 2 and 0.7 m, and quit.
Back at 23Z to 0230Z I got 9 to 19 Qs/hr on 6 m, LOS plus thin and
erratic E skip; 4 grids in EN, then 3 in EM and 1 in EL, and just 2
to 4 Qs/hr total on 2 and 0.7 m. The pattern continued Sun. morning;
a total of 6 to 12 Qs/hr., mostly on 6 m., with just 7 more new
skip grids. All bands silent after 1830Z; I took a long break.
Back at 2340Z, found (at last) strong sustained E skip underway.
Before QRT at 0130Z I got 30 Qs and 11 new skip grids on 6 m.
CW, plus 7 Qs and 2 new skip grids on 6 m. SSB. In all I got
53 Qs in 30 grids on Es, 34 of the Qs and half the grids on CW.
CW activity on 6 m. was quite high. Besides the skip Qs, I got
a lot of calls from very weak 6m. CW and SSB stations in FM18
and FM19. This may represent lots of hams with HF+6m. radios
trying the Magic Band using HF or makeshift 6 m. antennas. Great!
