Comments:
Travelling to just outside Porto for this one where it was great fun to
experience different band conditions and propagation. Also using a well
engineered station both inside and outside the shack.
Started off very well on 40M with good rates to the USA with working about 40
states in the first few hours before moving to 80M, but with a lot less success
so I went back to 40M until sunrise and the band started to thin out. Moving to
20M where the rate to EU was good and it felt like everyone was stood in line
and waiting their turn to call so the rate was good and think I had close to a
couple of 100/hr rates.
Staying on 20M for the morning I tried 15M but it hadn't opened properly so
went back to 20M for a while then tried again and had a good run to the USA for
a few hours before doing the same on 20M later in the evening.
Back to 40/80M over night swapping between the 2 trying to keep the rate as
high as possible but some nice mults from Asia and South America.
Sunday didn't seem as good and the rates were slower or maybe the activity just
didn't exist? I pushed on and started to look for mults more with the second
radio which bumped up the score with a mult being worth about 7000 points it
was worth the time and effort.
20M was the main band but still 15 was good and produced some nice runs and a
few surprise mults now and then.
I wasn't expecting much out of 10M but a little opening on Sunday evening I
managed to work a bunch of mults and zones which without would have lowered my
score. I did work a W6 on 10 and asked for a repeat a few times and clearly saw
03 03 03 CA CA CA which was my only USA station but will see what the UBN says
with this one!
Lack of activity from the Pacific, Africa and Caribbean which is where the gaps
are for zones and countries. Was nice to see plenty of activity from Asia with
some surprise calls from VU, YB, HS, JT and a lone ZL all for nice mults.
Was uploading my score to the online board and although some say why would you
do this, it's a real push to see others and think between about 3 of us it was
good fun seeing each other overtake then fall behind. Will see how close things
are after log checking!
I would like to say a huge thanks to Fil CT1ILT and Jose CT1CCJ for allowing me
to use their great station here in Portugal. They looked after me well and
couldn't have asked for better hosts. Mixed with a little holiday before it was
a nice change to have conditions which only annoy me when back in the UK, when
you see people in the south of EU still running to the USA when you are hearing
nothing!
DXlog performed great and have reassured me of the move from Wintest last
year.
A few things to improve on and change for next time for sure but this is always
a learning curve!
