Comments:
This operation was from the PJ1B site, which was last activated for CQ WW CW in
1999. For over 15 years, life intervened and the world kept turning, with no
radio activity from this location. About a year ago, serious planning began
for a return to competition, with the culmination this past weekend when PJ4K
was put on the air.
The only tower left standing from 1999 was a 95 footer, which was rejuvenated
with new guys and became the support structure for our inverted Vs on 80 and
40, and the T vertical for 160. Using salvaged Rohn 45 sections, a 35 foot
tower was installed, with three 3-element yagis for 10, 15 and 20 meters. This
is a rather meager restart when compared to the glory days of the late 90s, but
you have to start somewhere. None of the antennas used this weekend will
remain in the final station design.
We had originally planned a M/2 effort, but infrastructure build and antenna
work took priority over radio installation, and we found that on Wednesday we
had no functional amplifiers. Each and every amp in storage failed to heed the
call to duty. A huge thank you to Scott, W4PA/PJ4Q, for loaning us an
amplifier. The decision to enter as a M/S was easy at that point, but we knew
that a barefoot multiplier station was not going to be fun, and it wasn't very
much.
Rich N6KT was elected to man the run station for as long as he wanted, and Dave
N3RD filled in on Run. Marty W1MD and Walt WA3LRO took turns on the barefoot
mult station, with rather good success.
Many thanks to Charlie K1XX for pre-contest logistical support.
The rebuild will continue, so look for bigger and better things from PJ4K (SSB)
and PJ4W (CW) in the months and years to come. If it was a struggle to hear us
this weekend, it will be not be next year. It really feels great to be back on
the air from Bonaire, "Divers Paradise.”
