Many thanks again to Alex, KH6YY, for allowing us to operate from his incredible
QTH on the N. Shore of Oahu. Much effort over the past few months went into
station repairs, correcting issues that seem to pop up frequently in Hawaii's
tropical climate. Kimo KH7U and Doug KH6U both spent many days fixing the list
of issues. Work ranged from such mundane tasks as clearing growth off elevated
radials all the way to rebuilding the 80m yagi which was lowered and later
raised by helicopter (Google "KH6YY 80M Beam" for YouTube vids).
Without all this continual maintenance investment by Alex, Kimo, Doug, and many
other volunteers, these contest efforts wouldn't be able to continue.
Conditions seemed typical for this point of the solar cycle; perhaps marginally
worse than expected. 10m had showed some promise of TEP propagation into JA and
NA in the days prior to the contest, but QSOs were sparse. Overall, EU QSOs
just about made up 10% of our QSO total, a little lower than we would have
preferred, however everyone worked hard to maximize effort and nothing was left
on the table when 2359z Sunday came around. The most remarkable event of the
weekend was a 15M long path opening worked by K9NW Saturday evening. While the
rates were never spectacular, Mike was able to work 287 EU via the long path
which lasted until 2AM local time! This resulted in a very nice multiplier
total for this band. Unfortunately, 20m did not get this opening, presumably
due to daytime D-layer absorption over Africa along this same path (the same
thing that brought NA East Coast signals louder via LP for about 90 minutes
each day). The newly rebuilt 80m beam played well, with 74 European QSOs in
the log.
Thanks again to all for the contest QSOs; the team is next looking forward to
the ARRL DX CW contest next February.
