Comments:
I’ve always enjoyed operating on Top Band but I never seem to be able to clear
a weekend for one of the major 160 contests to put in a full effort. This time
around was different and I was at the controls of a fantastic station run by
RemoteHamRadio.com.
W2/Summit remote station is located in the northern Catskills mountains in the
NNY section on its own private secluded mountain top oasis. There isn’t any
nearby neighbors or man made noise at this site which makes it pleasure to
operate. The 4/SQ sits over 1200 feet from the station on its own dedicated
30/ac at the very top of the ridge with drop off in all directions. To put this

As many have noted, the first night was special. I was hoping for higher rates
in the early hours but as the quality of DX began to come in I really didn’t
care about the rate too much. The first night produced 255 EUs with huge signals
coming at EU sunrise. The last EU logged the first night was a little after 8Z.
From that point through sunrise the band was steady with a good number of strong
west coast stations logged and a very loud KH7M. An hour or so before sunrise I
managed to grab 5W1SA. Now the hope was to somehow get a JA in the log. About 40
minutes prior to sunset I heard a W7 station working a JA station that I could
copy. About 10 minutes later I found a spot around 1822 and began calling CQ and
I was delighted to be answered by three JAs over the next 20 minutes or so.
Having never worked a JA on 160 from any part of the world, this was quite
exciting for me.
Propagation wasn’t nearly as good the second night and rates were slow but I
was still determined to push forward. There was a decent EU peak at EU sunrise
and that lifted my spirits and I was surprised to see another 94 EU stations
logged bringing the total to 351 for the contest. I took a nap from 9-11Z and
then operated a few more hours to fill up my 30 hour allotment of operating
time.
I’m continually impressed by the quality of operation that is attainable
through remote means. This was a great outing with no technical problems using
the Elecraft K3/0.
