Everyone is commenting about the bad conditions. My overwhelming thought the
entire contest was, "Wow, this is awesome!"
I just could not believe how good the bands were. I think this is pretty
typical of anyone who is operating from W1 for the first time. I can only
imagine things with good conditions. It might blow my mind! 10 and 15 being
the exception, of course.
I operated remotely from the RHR station in Eastport, ME. The station is still
being built and is not really geared towards SO2R... yet! Ray and team have
really done a great job of making remote operation accessible for the masses
while also allowing it to be competitive. The low bands in Eastport are really
special. I could hear everything! Thanks to the RHR guys for allowing me to
play, it was one to remember. Being able to eat dinner with my family is
something I have not been able to do after a 48 hour contest. My wife gives the
remote setup two big thumbs up! For those of us who cannot realistically build
our own competitive station at home, this is a big deal. Take out the travel
time and expense of flying as a guest op and things look even better. Thanks

For the first time ever, I felt completely immersed in the operation like I was
actually "on site" as a guest op. Having done dozens of contests
remote, sometimes you still feel a bit disconnected. I suspect my upgraded
internet and addition of an IQ Router was just what I needed to make the
experience more complete.
10m: Typical short openings. A pipeline to P4!
15m: I heard the W2/3/4 guys running EU before I even heard a signal. Maine not
ideal this weekend for 15m. I managed to get some Q's squeezed in later in the
opening.
20m: A mosh pit on Sunday, oof! The 3 high stack of tribanders was required to
bore a hole in the band. JA's were loud Saturday, but I opted for 80m EU on the
second radio eventually instead of running a few more of them.
40m: Maine. Not much else to say there! The band was usable around 1700z to
EU. It seemed like 1800z was the magic time to start the EU runs. Awesome!
Things definitely went down hill shortly after sunset which was kind of strange
to me.
80m: With zero noise, I worked a lot of QRP guys in EU. A really incredible
experience to just pick a frequency and run 'em like it was 20m!
160m: The band didn't sound great, but we have a captive audience in this one
at least. Again, Maine not ideal much of the time. I think I timed the peaks
pretty well so that worked out. The Eastport 160m antenna is an absolute BEAST.
Maine is great for EU and everything east. Everything South and West I did a
lot of waiting in line.
Congratulations to N5DX on the huge score with these conditions. A great remote
shootout! The competition is what keeps me motivated. I took a 45 minute nap,
only because I went a long time without a QSO and was tired of tuning by the
same guys on the second radio. When I came back on the air, it took 15 minutes
to get another QSO. Dang, 15 minutes of sleep lost there!
Also congratulations to N4YDU @ TI7W for the monster 7000 QSO score from DX!
Imagine it with 10 meters...
