Comments:
I read a propagation forecast before the contest that said condx should improve
thru the weekend. Not sure if that was right or not. Each band seemed to have
a highlight somewhere while mostly mediocre except maybe 20 which was pretty
good throughout. 160 the second night was better and had a nice Eu sunrise peak
that was quite productive. 80 had excellent JA condx, both for the early
opening and our sunrise both days. 40 had an excellent Eu sunrise opening the
first night plus a lp HS at sunrise for a nice bonus. 20 was just solid with
great rates and every once in a while something neat would pop up. I had low
expectations for 15 and caught the tail end of (or all of a brief) Eu opening,
good for 40 unexpected Qs and several mults. Anything on 10 was a bonus
although I was surprised to find the openings in the morning both days expecting
mid-afternoon. 10 and 15 were both very limited on Sunday as was 40 the second
night.
I worked thru the bands at Eu sunrise Sat. night expecting a repeat of the fine
opening the first night on 40. When I got there not much at all was happening
so went to bed early. Checked the numbers before I quit for the night and found
that the K=4. I figured Sunday would be rough but the sunrise openings I caught
(overslept an hour) were decent and 20 was better Sunday am than Sat.
No equipment failures, a real plus. This place is built with string, sealing
wax and a few band-aids so one always worries. Did have some local QRN pop up.
It shows up usually when it's wet out and the temp cycles thru the freezing
point and that was this weekend. Not too bad though, although couple with
atmospheric noise copy was rough on the low bands Sat. night. Friday night I
got the distinct impression I was hearing better than the folks I was trying to
work. Saturday night it was reversed. I guess that makes things fair?
Pleased with the result and also really had a good time in this contest. Except
for a few frustrations things just went right. Missed a handful of mults on 10
and 160 when i didn't get the second radio in Tx quick enough and they left.
Had a few battles with the keyboard and had to get up and walk around a bit a
few times to clear my head and get some food. All part of the fun.
