Comments:
Thanks for all the QSOs. Band conditions were as expected based on the
propagation predictions, etc. However, the local storms made listening to the
low band, especially 80, like hearing popcorn pop. Static build up on the 40 m
antenna at times became overwhelming until it bleed off. Still was able to do
okay on 80/40 which was somewhat of a surprise.
Contest started off good. All the equipment was working and the SO2R box was
functioning as it should after being repaired. Started on 20 meters and had the
other radio/amp on 40 meters as did not have the other antenna on the tower for
15 meter use. Everything was going good until 8 minutes into the Contest. Then
the 40 meter radio started to transmit when I would transmit on 20 meters - the
20 m radio would stop xmitting as SO2R is setup for "last one wins".
Did the usual visual and functional checks, e.g., connectors tight,
switches/controls were where they should be, etc., without finding the obvious
problem. Even disconnected the SO2R stubs and bandpass filters switch boxes
used by the 20 meter radio - still had the RFI(?) issue when transmitting on (or
with) the 20 meter radio/amp (1500 Watts). During the troubleshooting in the
shack noticed the inadvertent keying of the 40 meter radio occurred with the 20
meter output above ~200 Watts.
Did a few checks at the base of the tower where the antenna switching is done
without any obvious "bad things" being seen. Made a few LP QSOs on 20
(less than 100W) and even one on 15 m. The rest Contest operating was on 80/40
m.
Still had a lot of fun and best part was once more working the RTTY contest
regulars - something I look forward to every RTTY contest.
