Icom 756Pro2 and Hustler mobile whip antennas.

It truly amazes me how well you can do with such a simple antenna when you are
near salt water. Had some good runs to EU between 21-23z on 20 meters and then
on 40 meters after sunset using 100 watts and a mobile antenna!

We make this yearly family trip to Jekyll Island, GA. I think my family has
figured out why I pick out the last weekend of July every year :) I get to play
some radio from somewhere were people want to work me (Almost like a Dxpedition)
and they get to go to the beach. This year was a little different since my kids
are teenagers (one college age) now and have part-time jobs which makes it
harder to get away as a family during the Summer. So I was solo this year.

Looking at the map I saw that Amelia Island, FL was only about 35 miles away
from NA-058. I decided to do two island groups this year. NA-138 as W4AN and
NA-058 as KU8E. Started in NA-138 as W4AN/NA138 in the morning and did about 4
hours from there. Conditions weren't all that great. I then drove up I-95 to
Jekyll Island and started from there as KU8E/NA58 in the late afternoon.
Conditions were much better and I quit around midnight to drive to the hotel I
was staying at off the island. One of these years I need to build a full size
20/40 meter vertical to see how I can do with a real antenna on the sea shore.

I echo the sentiment about the lack of activity in this contest from North
America. Maybe more people should try to do something like I did. Maybe it will
help spruce up activity from NA? Either way I'm not out to win anything in this
contest. I just like to have fun handing out a multiplier and get a better rate
that you don't get if you aren't on an island.

Hope to see everyone next year... Jeff
