Comments:
John K1ESE and Chuck W1HIS operated the western Maine station of Paul W1IMD,
remotely via the Internet. Paul's support was beyond the call, and we are very
grateful. We’re grateful also to Joe K1JB and Mike K1EU for allowing us to
use the Down East DX Association call, W1OO.
We transmitted with a Flex 6300 and an SPE Expert 1.3k amp. Our antennas were
* a 4-el. “MonstER” Yagi (a modified SteppIR MonstIR), rotatable, at 290-ft
height, which used for 40 through 10 m;
* a Sommer triband Yagi, rotatable, at 60-ft height, which we used only for 20
m;
* a cubical quad radiating mainly toward Europe, for 160 m but also useful for
80 m; and
* sloping dipoles favoring Europe but nearly omnidirectional, for 160 m and 80
m.
Friday night we got a good start on 40 m; then we worked 80 m for a while; and
we finished with a few Q's on 160 m — about as expected.
On Saturday morning we worked 80 and 40 until 20 m opened to Europe. After 1h
15 m on 20 m, we spent about six hours on 20 and 15 m, followed by a while on 10
m, which was open to the south. In early evening we returned to 20 m, then
finished on 40 and 80 m — again as expected.
Snow had begun to fall Saturday afternoon. The snow began freezing to our
antennas. Freezing rain and high wind followed and continued through the night.
The wind gauge near the MonstER measured 80-MPH gusts. The MonstER was whipped
around so severely that a guy/stay, which ordinarily stiffened an element,
became fouled and locked the element into a warped shape. The MonstER was
unusable; it could no longer be tuned. K1ESE also lost power and Internet
service Saturday night.
By Sunday morning, the Sommer also became unusable. Its SWR was sky-high and
— worse -- extreme RF in the shack [which one of us (W1HIS) suspects resulted
from a broken feedline connection] knocked out the amp and an interlock circuit.
We logged our last QSO at 1341Z (9:41 AM local time) on Sunday. We were down
for the count. We spent most of Sunday assessing the damage. Fixing the big
stuff will take days of work.
Murphy won this bout, but we’ll be back for CQWW DX CW.
