Temporary antennas on four AB-577 masts
This should have been a great contest. When I turned on my radio, there was 40
db of noise above my normally quiet noise floor. I could not copy any complete
call signs and relied on the cluster for almost every contact. The noise source
was toward Europe. I was able to turn my antennas 90 degrees to the noise to
bring it down to 10 db. But the direction was Asia or South America. I am also
challenged to the west with 14,000 ft mountains five miles away and cannot work
the Pacific on 15 or 10 meters. I only called CQ the last two hours when I
could hear Asians answering my CQ's. Otherwise I would have been an alligator.
The conditions on the low bands were spectacular. I worked into Europe on 40m
as if it was 20 meters. On 80 I put 19 European countries in the log. Twenty
meters was just great for the couple hours it was open to Europe. But 15 meters
just never opened above Zone 33. I had no Zone 14 or 15 contacts. I checked 10
meters often to see if there were any blips on my P3. On Sunday around noon
time I saw two blips and worked CE and LU. I hung around a few minutes to see
if there was any activity and was rewarded with Zone 3 and 4 via backscatter.
I will disassemble all the antennas until next year as they are Field Day style
antennas. Heading back home to NH for Christmas.
