Comments:
Was set up for SO2R but only made 5 QSOs with the second radio before the power
went from a KW to under 1 watt. The radio and amp still put out a KW in Tune
mode and I heard diddles on the monitor. I tried on and off for the next several
hours to get it to work again, wasting time restarting everything. I suspect
something changed with the sound card but I don't know what and finally decided
to just abandon the second radio as it was distracting me from operating the
radio that worked.
K6DAJ was also operating from the W6YX station SO2R, but started with one amp
and one barefoot rig. We eventually set David up with the second amp that I was
no longer using.
Most of the time we weren't aware of each other being on the same band. The
exception was 15 meters where the noise floor across the band was raised when
either of us transmitted causing weak signals to be unprintable. I didn't spend
much time on 15 as with one radio the rate was almost always better on 20.
I completed WAS with ND and VT being the last two states worked. Worked VE1-7
and VO1 in Canada and had 12 EU Qs for 10 mults. Only Asian mults were JA, RU0
and DS. Nothing from Africa. Oceania was KH6, DU, ZL and E51 (who sent 73 when I
asked for a number). Most DX mults were Caribbean, Central and South America.
I took my one off-time later than I should have and ended up with only 8 JAs on
40. David and I both observed that rates on 40 were much higher with the Yagi
than with the inverted vee. I tended to mostly click-and-pounce when using the
inverted vee and ran with the Yagi.
My highest 10-minute rate with the single radio was 126 and the highest
60-minute rate was 99. Clicking and pouncing sometimes got the 10-minute rate up
into the 90's and my best clock hour of 86 was half-run and half-C&P.
I'm disappointed that my attempt at SO2R for RTTY RU was so short-lived. I
didn't have this problem in my last RTTY SO2R effort, the February NAQP almost a
year ago.
It was a pleasure to meet and host David, K6DAJ, at the W6YX station and I look
forward to David participating in future efforts with us.
73,
-Mike, N7MH
