Comments:

At N6ZFO's suggestion, tried a new experiment: Received on a remote receiver,
the KFS Web SDR in Half Moon Bay, CA., about 50 miles from my home in Berkeley.
I could definitely hear better on 40. However, S&P meant typing in
frequencies in two places (the receiver and N1MM for the transmitter), switching
between apps, etc. I did have a better rate than I've had on 40 lately, but the
cumbersomeness of the separate RX/TX perhaps offset the benefits. When I went
to 80, I gave up on it and switched to just local receive. Still, my rate went
down on 80 for whatever reason. 160 seemed good tonight... I even made it
outside of CA with WJ9B... for my 160Tx antenna, that's DX. I did not try
N6ZFO's other suggestion, which was to try QRO, because I wanted to try one
thing at a time. My overall score is not better than my best days in the past,
but it's better than some of my worst days lately. So a rather inconclusive
experiment. Anyway, that's show business.
