Comments:
In the days leading up to this contest I was unsure if it would be a
multi single or single op of some kind. In the end WM5R and I did a
sort of tag team multi-single. My oldest son's birthday is 4-Mar and
he turned 18 this year and we had a party for him on Saturday. I
operated from the start of the contest until about 9 AM Saturday
morning when WM5R showed up and took over while I was at the birthday
party. When I got back around 4 PM WM5R had to head back home. Ken
did a great job keeping the rate up and working mults on the high
bands all day Saturday. Without him - there would have been a big
hole in the rate sheet and the score.
I operated the rest of the contest taking a about 2 hours off in the
early morning on Sunday to get some rest. A bit afternoon on Sunday
W5KV and W5WTH stopped by to get some time on the air. Things were
really slow so I am not sure how much enjoyable the air time was but
it was nice for me to get a break and let them get a taste of a DX
contest even if the conditions were a bit poor. We also got to chat a
bit since there were many unanswered CQs.
I hope they can come back for some more contests in the future.
The bands were mostly poor - 10 meters did not yield anything out of
North and South America. I was hoping for some Pacific or Africa but
there was no propagation.
15 meters was a bit better. But no Europe. I did manage to work one
JA station - JH4UYB - I moved him from 20 to 15 and we were able to
work on scatter beaming the South Pacific. I have done this many
times during poor conditions and low sunspots. Sometimes I can do it
on 10 - and I did try but heard nothing on 10 this time.
It is possible I could have worked some EU in a similar manner but did
not move anyone and did not hear any while calling many CQs to the
southeast. I can recall some contests where I have been able to have
some rate on the scatter path to Europe when it was not open directly.
Overall it was great fun - I am sure that had it been a true M/S with
a few ops here full time we the score would have been a bit better as
I was operating with one radio and not really able to tune the other
bands for mults while CQing. And I know this caused me to miss a
number of easy mults over the course of the contest but it was still a
fun radio contest.
