With the coronal hole blast I was expecting horrible conditions, but condx were
not bad. I decided to spend some time on 40m since 80 and 160 would have been
rough.
Condx were never good enough to get an EU run going, but it was easy enough to
S&P to get the mults.
However, because of the muted trans-polar prop, I found it hard to stay in the
chair. I truly have great respect for real contesters that can push through it.
I got easily distracted and ended up watching a movie with the XYL and going to
bed early Friday night. I also slept in on Saturday am so I missed a fair bit
of the early Asia and OC stuff, but the trans-polar EU opening was pretty good.
As usual, the band opened via mostly LP to EU, but eventually switched to full
direct path over the pole and stayed open most of the day. The usual multi-path
echo ripped up a lot of signals and made copy almost impossible until things
settled down. Even JA and most of Asia was coming in skew path to the west.
This actually made things easier, since with the beam direct west I was good for
OC, JA and EU LP, and since I have instant 180deg switching, I could reverse for
NA. Some good Asia like HS0 and V85 via LP SE over the USA during the
afternoon.
Z22-I copied 3 VU but never made it, Z37-called 5H3UA a lot but I was
overwhelmed by EC, Z34...nadda, and Z18-well, I don't know what happen there,
thats usually not a problem from here. It was nice to work Gudmi TF3SG 1 hour
before the end of the contest for Z40. It was a nasty traffic-jam pile for him.
It seemed like Z40 was in high demand.

Thanks to all who heard me and all who called me.
73, de steve VE6WZ....now, back to 160m.
