Comments:
I looked at last year's results and was reminded of how much fun I had but how
dis pointed I was in the final result. I had started with a couple hours of 200
and then spent a lot of time having fun chasing multipliers over the weekend.
This year I wanted to maintain the fun but make sure I spent more time calling
CQ. It seemed reasonable that I could make another thousand contacts over 48
hours which would put my goal over 5,000 and still be able to make some
memorable contacts.
It was obvious after the first day that the 5,000 contact goal would be easy to
achieve although the conditions on Sunday were so awful with even the USA
stations sounding weak and washed out on 20m that I went to 40m 2.5 hours before
sunset.
Some of the memorable contacts include working HS0ZAR on 80, 40 and 20 with him
calling me on 20 very early Sunday morning when I was trying to work Europe.
Working VK9CZ on 80, 40 and 20 with the 80m contact being long path at sunset.
I believe I could detect in his code his disbelief and then surprise and
excitement in who was calling and how loud I Must have been (based on how loud
he was here). 10 minutes later I worked KH0/KC0W first call long path on 20m.
My wife asked last night what was going on when she heard me yell
"boom". Only wish is that I would have worked a zone 40 on 40m and
found a way to work JT5DX on 40. That would have been 39 zones.
I'm usually trying to do something to improve the antenna situation. This year I
put about 18 feet of tubing sticking out of the mast above my little Tribander
at 60 feet. I have a 40m inverted V with the middle at 78 feet and the ends up
about 60 feet. The dipole was to help with contacts that don't have a water
shot from my vertical and to add top loading for 160m. I shunt fed the tower
for both 160 and 80. I figure it's close to a quarter wave on 160 and half wave
on 80. The 80m antenna works really well.
