Started off with one of my best hours ever – 243. Wished that would have
continued for all 10 hours!
A major key to this contest was successfully timing my break around a fading 20m
band to a peaking 40m band, In hindsight, I didn’t get it right.
After returning from a two-hour break, my goal was to run on 40m in the early
evening before it faded in oblivion. That worked for about an hour, but once
darkness fell, I ran into a propagational brick wall. 40m quickly fell into the
dumpster and emptied out with only a few FL and TX stations left standing.
Unlike last weekend on CW, 40m never bounced back in the evening, and actually
got worse.
My only option was to try and run on 80m with the band still a couple of hours
from peaking, while working stations S&P on the second radio. It was a low
band limbo rate killer, and sucked the air out of any hope for meeting my
goals.
Meanwhile, with a strong east coast advantage on the low bands, maximizing high
band activity was another key. Prior to the contest, 15m seemed deader than a
door nail, but my first hour was so good on 20m, I didn’t have time to check
15m until the second hour. Surprisingly, spotlight propagation featured W3, W4,
and W8 with excellent signals. There wasn’t a lot of volume, but I may have
missed the best part during that first hour.
Just like the CW weekend, my stateside struggles continue on 160m. Despite S9
signals from guys back east, it was difficult to work them. Tuning around, I
could hear LY1PM and OK2EQ calling CQ on CW with great signals, so maybe the
band was long. Oddly, guys in OH and MI seemed to have no trouble hearing me.
Despite the low band challenges, it was a fun contest. Thanks to all for the Qs
and a fun Saturday on the radio.
