Comments:
This contest always occurs during a stretch at work where I am very QRL. So I
just go home and operate. Had a conference call almost right up to contest
time. So there was zero mental preparation.
Wow, what a pleasant surprise. I had very little enthusiasm for the contest due
to the (perhaps FT8 caused) sparse DX on the CW bands, especially at night. But
the bands were packed. EU was runnable on 160 through 40 the first night, a
very rare occurence. Much fun. 20 meters was full beyond 14120. It is very
cool to see so many guys get on around the world to work the lower 48 and VE.
Montana is not a competitive DX contest location. But it is a mult in this
contest, and it is very cool to be hunted. Amazed by how many Caribbean
stations called in. I made a lot of moves for people. My pleasure! You were
almost always a mult for me as well.
Sometimes it was too good. The zero-beat pileups on me from EU on 20 meters
were very intense at the peaks. The idea of coming back to a partial call is
useless -- no one stops transmitting. Having a very loud key clicking station
(there are a lot of clicks when I beam EU) park on an adjacent channel doesn't
help.
There will be a lot of NILs I am sure -- no matter what I sent, there were 10-20
times when I heard two stations sending and QSLing my report simultaneously.
Sometimes I wonder if the high speed senders even copy the code? Once I had two
ES stations calling, and no matter how many times I sent and repeated the call
of the ES station I was working, the other one just kept sending and sending.
When I finally completed the QSO, the "other" ES took off -- I am sure
I am in his log.
These are good problems to have -- too many callers! Always a thrill to work
the very savvy and high speed EU guys!
Station and antennas worked flawlessly. Operator is starting to break down.
15 meters tried to open to southern EU but didn't quite. 10 meters was a total
bust.
