Comments:
I came very close to not operating this contest. I was not able to prepare for
the contest on Friday so did so on Thursday. That's when I discovered problems
with 3 main rotators. Thursday we had freezing rain and temps in the 20/30's F.
I first found my indicator for my 80 meter yagi stopped indicating. OK not a
big deal I will point at Europe and use a dipole for the other directions. In
aligning the 80 I moved a 402CD to Europe which happens to be against the tower
leg. Then in helping my noise buddy WD8DSB he asked me to rotate my secondary
15 meter antennas to try and pin point the direction of the noise. While
rotating that tower with the 15's and my main 40 meter stack I got the dreaded
"no motion detected" error message. The antenna tower was stuck SE
and would not move after a lot of try's. The same thing with the other 40 meter
rotatable antenna was stuck against the tower on EU. So at 10 pm Thursday
without any rotating 40 m antennas I thought I would just pack it in. On the wx
forecast that night they said temps would a high in the low teens and single
digits again F for Friday and that the winds now were 20 MPH. I've done a lot
of repair through many years in low temps but again I was not available because
of commitments on Friday. So with the winds I thought there might be a slim
chance the Tailtwister/brake on the 402CD wedged against the tower might brake
free. I had previously tried on and off about 20 times with no luck but finally
after holding down the brake for 2 or 3 minutes the brake released and I was
able to rotate it off the stop. I went back to the no motion tower error (40
meter main) and I lucked out again as it rotated. Not sure why as always before
the "no motion" error meant I had a bad wire in the cable bundle.
I am super glad I did operate- conditions were super from 160 to 20. When I can
work Europeans on 40 up until 1200z conditions are great.
Thanks to all, all over the world to get on and work the US/Canada making it
unbelievable fun.
