K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. In the
July 2020 NAQP RTTY, N3UM and W3GB operated Multi-2.
Our goal was to beat our best previous NAQP RTTY result, in Feb.
2020, a claim of 541 Qs. Our start was rough; cable-TV internet
modem went dark ~1803Z, so no spots. It did this a year ago; hot
and humid, bad for TV cable. While W3GB did tune-&-call on 20m.
after 1812Z, N3UM cut out the TV splitter to get +3 dB. That
woke up the modem, so we got spots.
But, N3UM did not get on 40m. till 1824Z, then got just 6 Qs in
22 min. Where IS everyone? Oh, chasing E skip on 15m. Our C3 is
faulty, so N3UM scraped up 12 15-m. Qs in 1.1 hr. with a weak
backup, a 40m. ant. and a tuner.
For W3GB on 20m, both runs and spot clicks were slow but steady,
52 Qs in 2 hr. At 20Z we had 68 Qs, 48 fewer than in Feb. The
next 2 hrs, with N3UM on 40m. and W3GB on 20m, were far better;
159 total Qs, 133 running. At 22Z we had 7 more Qs than in Feb.
>From 22-00Z we took offset breaks to eat and still got 77 total
Qs. Our best 3 hrs. were 00-03Z, 250 total Qs, 83.3/hr. W3GB got
a last 24 Qs on 20m. + 85 on 80m = 109, all but 4 running. N3UM
got 141 Qs running on 40m.
>From 03-05Z, total Qs were 44 and then 49/hr. The last hr.
it was 11 Qs on 40m. and 12 on 80m; very few left to work! Our
final claim of 660 Qs was 1.2 X more than we claimed in Feb. and
2.2 X more than in July 2019. Our RTTY setups and on-air skills
are much better than they were a year ago.
We got 44 states plus DC, and 7 VE Pvs; missed AK, DE, VT, NM,
SD, and ND.
