Comments:
This is the first time I ran a RTTY contest as HP. I don’t have good antennas
for the higher bands. Even though there are more 3 pt. QSOs to be had on 20m
than anywhere else, I knew I would not be able to make it produce what it’s
capable of. I also knew that 15m and 10m would really only be good for
producing a handful of multipliers and some 3 pt. QSOs. I decided that I would
try and use 80m to make up some of my anticipated deficit from 20m. On Friday
afternoon, I put an inverted V up for 80m with the apex at 60 ft which is twice
as high as my present fan dipole. I think this paid off. I managed to produce
307 QSOs from 80m.
When the A index was 20 on Friday night, I thought; “well it can’t stay
there all weekend”. I was right. By Saturday evening it had climbed as high
as 26! This made the return to the 20-24 range on Sunday seem like an
improvement. The noise levels on the lower bands were wicked awful.
I had to work for a few hours on Sunday which I’m certain cost me a healthy
number of QSOs on 20m.
My previous best effort in 2016 with LP was about half this score.
Thanks to everyone for the QSOs and their patience.
