Comments:
I had a good time in the contest this year - the station and operator
did not have any issues and conditions were better than any of us
expected. I learned a few things. This was only the second contest
where I have finally gotten to use full auto band switching of the
bandpass filters and the band selection switching. I have been doing
it manually for at my station for 18 years but when I got the Alpha 87
amps a few years ago it became obvious that since I did not have to
touch the amps any longer I should make the bandpass filters and 2x6
switches follow the radios. It is nice I kind of forget about those
thing now - I just move the radio to a new band and it all works. I
am only a few years behind the times. :-)
I operated somewhere close to 47 hours. I tried to get some sleep on
Saturday afternoon - but woke up after an hour and got back on the
radio. That rest and a few breaks here and there of around 10 mins or
less were all the time I spent away from the radio. In the early
morning hours on the first night I was really feeling tired but did
not feel that way on the second night or until about 3 hours from then
end when I started really feeling like I was starting to fade and my
thinking was getting 'slow'.
I think activity was up as it has been in all the contests since March
but the global pandemic exposed something about the CQ WW that I guess
is obvious when you think about it but was stark in reality. The CQ
WW DX contest is driven by the many people that travel to all corners
of the earth to assemble and operate for 48 hours. And this year those
people were missing from the bands. All of those fairly easy low band
mults in the Caribbean, Central America and South America were just
not there - making 160 and 80 sound like ghost towns. Going to 160 at
06z and not find it full of stations was weird. In a similar fashion
having many of the large multi-multi stations around the globe silent
or doing much scaled back efforts was also obvious. That made mults
much harder to come by esp for those of us that are further from
country rich Europe. It only gets worse going further west.
I still had a good time on the bands - QSO rates were good at times -
although of my almost 4000 contacts 1100 were zero point USA contacts.
I am pretty sure that most of them did not need the contact for a mult
but if they will all call me again in Sweepstakes that would be nice.
And along with them I am looking forward to working all of you again
in the coming contests next month!
