Comments:
What a blast. Finally some good propagation and 15m were really open.
I was really hyped for this contest and wanted to play full time in it. I often
go QRP in contests because I like the challenge of working the world with very
few watts but this time I opted for the Low Power category in order to maximize
my fun and try to hit at least 1000Q. Being SOAB unassisted I decided to opt for
the Classic overlay as well but once hit the 24 hours allowed times I kept going
to reach my goal and keep having a bit of fun on the bands.
Unfortunately I am not able to keep antennas erected so the days before the
contest were spent laying out the two wires that would have covered the contest
bands. I used two very nice trees in my property to hang the wires. A pity those
trees might need to be taken down soon.
I have never worked so many stations on low bands, and specifically on 80m. Both
QSO numbers and mult numbers amaze me. 160m were supposed to be used only to
work a few easy stations I could hear. Even if expectations were low I would
have expected some more. I had been CQed in my face by very loud S5 stations and
other "neighbor" countries. Those would have been juicy mults to add
to my score.
10m showed some life and was Amazing. I often moved to 10 to sweep the band and
maybe find a signal or two. Unfortunately I could not work much. Weird enough I
was able to find and work JT1 and a VK (heard VR2, BY5 and much more exotic) but
could not work close by european countries. Not sure if it's a problem with my
antenna (well, it's a poor system anyway) or just bad timing altogether.
15m finally opened up and I could work many US stations, even zone 3 that was
missing in my log on 15m since a while. Strategically speaking I made some
mistakes and was not present in that band as much as I should have been. It's
usually one of my best bands and I should have been more present to work more
contacts and maybe some more "local" multipliers.
I've been on cqcontest.com and contestonlinescore.com for the entire contest.
The score board really helped in keeping me motivated till the end (even if it
was quite frustrating at times to see my score being downgraded by other
competitors). I had some nice time chasing Gabriele IT9RGY who was running
assisted. He then switched to a more relaxed operation and I kept pursuing my
1000Q goal.
Eventually fulfilled I unplugged and the contest was over for me. I'm pretty
satisfied with the result considering my operating conditions and I hope one day
to be able to play SOAB from a more performing situation. I'll need to improve
my skills to get there anyway. More MR/DXLog practice for sure!
Thanks for all the contacts and hope to work you soon again in another contest.
RXT: FT-950 + SDR panadapter
ant: 40m/15m wire vertical with 4 ground radials - 80m/160m "ugly"
